# Eagles (DD-124)

> Eagles have large eyes with densely packed photoreceptors and deep foveae, which let them resolve fine detail at a distance. Behavioral studies show some large-eyed raptors, such as the wedge-tailed eagle, have about twice the spatial resolution of humans; the popular '4 to 8 times' figures don't match those measurements. Their forward-facing eyes also give a useful field of binocular vision for judging distance when striking prey. The footage shows a bald eagle perched and swooping over water, with the presenter.

## Quick facts

- **DD-124-F01**: Some large raptors resolve about twice the detail humans do. _(Write-up · Exhibit C (About twice ours))_
- **DD-124-F02**: Eagles have deep foveae. _(Write-up · Exhibit A (Big eyes))_

## Write-up

An eagle's eyes resolve finer detail than yours. Studies put some large raptors at about twice human acuity.

1. **Big eyes**: Eagles have large eyes with densely packed photoreceptors.
2. **Deep foveae**: Deep foveae help them resolve fine detail.
3. **About twice ours**: Some large raptors have about twice human spatial resolution.
4. **Binocular field**: Forward-facing eyes help eagles judge distance.
5. **Hunting**: Sharp vision helps them spot and strike prey.

## Reel vs. record

- **Note**: 'Up to 8x more clearly than humans': I'd scale this back. Behavioral studies put some large raptors at about twice human resolution.
