# Harder Than Before (DD-242)

> Steel is an alloy of iron with a small amount of carbon, usually less than 2%, and often other elements. Most steel is made by smelting iron ore with coke in a blast furnace and then refining the iron in a basic oxygen furnace; much of the rest is made by melting scrap in electric arc furnaces. The steel is cast, then rolled or forged into shapes, and finished with heat and surface treatments. According to the World Steel Association, world production was about 1.89 billion tonnes in 2023. The footage shows furnaces, casting and rolling mills, with the presenter.

### Transcript

Steel is one of the most widely used materials in the world, essential for buildings, infrastructure, vehicles, and more. The production of steel begins with the extraction of iron ore, which is then processed into iron in a blast furnace. The iron is then combined with carbon and other alloying elements to create steel. This steel is formed into various shapes and sizes through processes like casting, rolling, and forging. The final steel products undergo finishing processes such as heat treatment and surface treatment before being ready for use. With over 1.8 billion tons of steel produced annually worldwide, the steel industry plays a vital role in the global economy and infrastructure development. NOW YOU KNOW!
