# Hungarian Herding Dogs (DD-691)

> The Puli (plural Pulik) is a medium-sized Hungarian sheepdog. The American Kennel Club says the Magyars brought it to Hungary more than a thousand years ago to herd sheep over rough ground, where it might even jump onto the animals' backs. The AKC standard gives a height of about 16-17 inches and 25-35 lb, in solid black, rusty black, gray or white. Its coat cords naturally from about 10-12 months old, and it can be shown corded or brushed out. The large, cream-white dog in this Reel's footage looks more like a Komondor, Hungary's other corded breed. The Komondor is a much bigger livestock guardian rather than a herder. It's always white, at least about 25.5-27.5 inches tall, and its coat mats into flat cords that owners must separate by hand. Hungary also has other herding breeds, such as the Pumi and Mudi, so the title's plural is apt. Both the Puli and the Komondor were nearly lost during the Second World War.

## Quick facts

- **DD-691-F01**: The Magyars brought the Puli to Hungary more than a thousand years ago to herd sheep. _(Write-up · Exhibit A (An ancient herder))_

## Write-up

Dreadlocks that work for a living. Hungary's corded Puli herds; the bigger Komondor guards.

1. **An ancient herder**: The AKC says the Magyars brought the Puli to Hungary more than a thousand years ago to herd sheep. Pulik were agile enough to jump onto the backs of sheep.
2. **Size and colors**: The Puli standard gives about 16-17 inches and 25-35 lb, in solid black, rusty black, gray or white.
3. **The cords**: A Puli's coat starts cording at about 10-12 months, and the breed can be shown corded or brushed out.
4. **The bigger cousin**: The Komondor is a white-only livestock guardian, much larger than the Puli. Its mats must be separated at the skin to form cords.
5. **Near loss**: Both breeds were nearly lost during the Second World War, and it took years to rebuild them.

## Reel vs. record

- **Footage mismatch**: the large, cream-white dog with heavy flat cords looks like a Komondor (a livestock guardian), not a Puli (a smaller herder).
- **Note**: 'Sheep and cattle': the AKC describes the Puli as a sheep herder. Cattle work isn't typical of its documented history.
- **Note**: 'Forms natural dreadlocks' needs a caveat: cords form naturally from about 10-12 months, but owners still separate and maintain them. Pulik can also be shown brushed out.
- **Missing scale**: Pulik are medium-sized, about 16-17 in and 25-35 lb, in solid black, rusty black, gray or white.
- **Missing context**: Hungary's other herders include the Pumi and Mudi. The Komondor and Kuvasz are guardians, not herders.
