# ICECORE (DD-398)

> Ice cores are long cylinders drilled from glaciers and ice sheets, some from depths of more than 3,000 meters. Snow builds up in yearly layers, and air bubbles trapped in the ice preserve samples of the past atmosphere, including greenhouse gases. Antarctic cores extend back about 800,000 years and record past climate and volcanic eruptions. The footage shows a view down a borehole in the ice.

### Transcript

Did you know, drilling for ice cores involves using specialized drills to extract cylindrical samples from glaciers or ice sheets, often reaching depths of thousands of meters. The drill cuts through ice, capturing sequential layers in hollow barrels. To preserve the stratified record of snow accumulation over millennia, each layer represents a specific period in Earth's history, with trapped air bubbles providing data on past atmospheric conditions such as greenhouse gas levels. Analyzing these cores offers critical insights climate patterns, volcanic activity, and human impact. NOW YOU KNOW!
