# Mount Bokty (DD-706)

> Bokty is an isolated, trapezoid-shaped remnant mountain (an inselberg) in Kazakhstan's Mangystau region, about 90 km from Zhanaozen. It's protected within the Mangystau State Historical and Cultural Reserve. Local tourism sources say it stands 165 m high and that its name means 'pie' in Kazakh, after its cake-like layers. The bands are marine sediments laid down on an ancient sea floor and later carved by wind and water. The white layers are chalk, and the red and brown ones are colored by iron. Nearby, the Kyzylkup tract shows the same striping and is nicknamed 'Tiramisu'. The mountain looks like an upturned boat from one side and a striped pyramid from another, and it appears on Kazakhstan's 1,000-tenge banknote.

## Write-up

A mountain layered like a pie. Bokty's chalk and iron bands rise from Kazakhstan's desert.

1. **Where**: Bokty is in the Mangystau region, within the Mangystau State Historical and Cultural Reserve, about 90 km from the town of Zhanaozen.
2. **The 'pie'**: Its Kazakh name is usually translated as 'pie', after the cake-like layers. Seen from different sides, it looks like an upturned boat or a striped pyramid.
3. **Sea-floor layers**: The mountain formed from sediments on the floor of an ancient sea. White chalk alternates with iron-rich red and brown bands, which wind and water erosion later exposed.
4. **Neighbors**: The nearby Kyzylkup tract shows the same chalk-and-iron striping, which earned it the nickname 'Tiramisu'.
5. **Height**: Tourism sources give its height as 165 m, an isolated inselberg rising from a salt flat (sor).
