# Orwellian (DD-045)

> George Orwell's ninth and final completed book, Nineteen Eighty-Four, came out from Secker & Warburg in London on June 8, 1949, and in the U.S. five days later. Orwell died seven months after publication. The novel is set in London, chief city of 'Airstrip One', a province of the superstate Oceania, ruled by the Party under its symbolic head, Big Brother. Winston Smith, an Outer Party member, works at the Ministry of Truth, revising back issues of The Times while the originals vanish down 'memory holes' into a furnace. He rebels with Julia and is betrayed by O'Brien of the Inner Party. Under torture he is broken until he loves Big Brother. The Reel's footage comes from Michael Radford's 1984 film, with John Hurt as Winston.

## Write-up

The hero of 1984 rewrites history for a living. Winston Smith edits old newspapers at the Ministry of Truth to fit the Party line.

1. **Publication**: Secker & Warburg published Nineteen Eighty-Four in London on June 8, 1949. Harcourt Brace followed in the U.S. on June 13. It was Orwell's ninth and last completed book; he died seven months later.
2. **Where it's set**: The story takes place in London, chief city of Airstrip One (formerly Britain), a province of Oceania, one of three superstates in perpetual war. Even the year 1984 is uncertain within the story.
3. **Who rules**: Society is split into the privileged Inner Party, the subservient Outer Party and the 'proles'. Big Brother is the Party's symbolic head, sustained by a manufactured cult of personality.
4. **Winston's job**: Winston Smith is an Outer Party member who works at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting back issues of The Times to match the Party's current line. The originals are dropped into 'memory holes' that lead to a furnace.
5. **The plot**: Winston and Julia seek out O'Brien, an Inner Party official they believe belongs to the resistance Brotherhood. It's a trap. Both are arrested and broken, and Winston ends up loving Big Brother.
6. **A bestseller**: The first UK printing ran to 25,575 copies. By 1970 more than 8 million copies had sold in the U.S., and in 1984 it topped the country's all-time bestseller list.

## Reel vs. record

- **Confirmed from the frames**: the Reel is about Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (captions at 0.8–2.5 s). It was published in 1949, specifically June 8, 1949, by Secker & Warburg. [ISFDB; Wikipedia]
- **Typo**: 'lead by' should be 'led by'. [frames]
- **Imprecise**: Winston isn't just 'a low-ranking party member'. He's in the Outer Party and works at the Ministry of Truth falsifying records, so he rewrites history himself. [Orwell Foundation; Wikipedia]
- **Imprecise**: 'set in a totalitarian future' was the future in 1949. The setting is London (Airstrip One) in Oceania, and even the year 1984 is uncertain in the novel. [Wikipedia; Orwell Foundation]
- **Footage note**: the clips are from Michael Radford's 1984 film adaptation, with John Hurt as Winston (the INGSOC rally and Ministry cubicle scenes), not from an illustration of the book. Credits read 'cinmovie' then 'TTS'. [frames]
