# Panda Panda Panda (DD-159)

> The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a bear native to the mountains of central China. Bamboo makes up more than 99% of its diet. A panda grips bamboo with a 'pseudo-thumb', an enlarged wrist bone (the radial sesamoid). Females are fertile for only about two to three days a year, and breeding programs have used artificial insemination. The IUCN downgraded the species from Endangered to Vulnerable in 2016 as wild numbers rose. The footage shows giant pandas eating and climbing, with the presenter.

While classified as bears, pandas have evolved to possess specialized adaptations, including a thumb formed by an extension of their wrist bone, which aids in gripping bamboo stocks. Giant pandas face the challenge of low reproductive rates, with females having a short window of fertility each year. Conservation initiatives such as artificial insemination and dedicated breeding programs aim to boost their numbers and genetic diversity. NOW YOU KNOW!
