# PandaPandaPanda (DD-439)

> Giant pandas are classified as carnivorans and keep a carnivore's gut and genes, yet about 99% of their diet is bamboo, from which they get little energy or protein. A modified wrist bone helps them grip stems, and their wild numbers have recovered enough for the IUCN to list them as Vulnerable rather than Endangered since 2016.

## Quick facts

## Write-up

The giant panda is a carnivore by anatomy that lives as a herbivore, a mismatch that explains why bamboo feeding dominates its life.

1. **A carnivore's gut**: The giant panda still has the digestive system and carnivore-specific genes of a carnivoran, so it gets little energy and protein from bamboo.
2. **The false thumb**: The thumb-like digit on a panda's paw is actually a modified sesamoid bone that helps it hold bamboo.
3. **Counting pandas**: China's Fourth National Survey (2011 to 2014) estimated 1,864 wild giant pandas older than 1.5 years, while DNA analysis of droppings suggested there could be as many as 3,000.
4. **Downlisted**: Since 2016 the giant panda has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and Chinese authorities also classified it as vulnerable in July 2021.

### Transcript

Did you know, giant pandas consume 26 to 84 pounds, or 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo daily, depending on the availability and nutritional quality of the bamboo. Since bamboo is low in nutrients, pandas must eat large quantities to meet their energy needs. They feed on various parts of the bamboo plant, including leaves, stems, and shoots, with shoots being the most nutritious. Pandas spend up to 12 hours a day eating, making their diet almost entirely dependent on bamboo, though they occasionally consume other vegetation or small animals. NOW YOU KNOW!
