# Russia's Greatest Empress (DD-219)

> Catherine II, known as Catherine the Great, was born a German princess in 1729 and married the future Peter III of Russia. In 1762, months after he took the throne, a coup overthrew Peter and Catherine became empress, ruling until her death in 1796, longer than any other female ruler of Russia. Her reign saw territorial expansion, Enlightenment-era reforms, and patronage of the arts; the art collection she began in 1764 became the Hermitage Museum. She was a keen rider and often rode astride rather than sidesaddle. The footage shows illustrations of Catherine, her court and Russia, with the presenter.
