# SHŌGUN (DD-223)

> Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543 to 1616) won the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and was appointed shogun in 1603, founding the Tokugawa shogunate. His successors ruled Japan from Edo, now Tokyo, until 1868, a period of about 265 years known as the Edo period. The era brought internal peace after more than a century of civil war, strict social order, economic growth and policies that sharply limited foreign contact. The footage shows illustrations of Ieyasu and Edo-era Japan, with the presenter.
