A Look Inside
Short answer: Decapping removes the plastic or ceramic package from an integrated circuit such as a RAM chip to expose the silicon die. It is usually done with hot acids such as fuming nitric or sulfuric acid, or by milling or laser ablation.
The exposed die can then be inspected under optical or electron microscopes for failure analysis, quality checks or reverse engineering. The footage shows a memory chip being opened and its die magnified.

Video transcript: A Look Inside: Decapping Strips a Chip's Package to Expose the Silicon Die
Did you know RAM decapping is a process used to expose the internal components of a RAM or random access memory chip by removing its protective outer casing or package? This technique is often employed in hardware analysis, failure investigations, or reverse engineering to study the chip's architecture and functionality at a microscopic level. The decapping process typically involves chemical etching where acids like nitric or sulfuric acid dissolve the casing or mechanical techniques such as precision milling or laser cutting to carefully strip away the outer layer. Once decapped, the chip's silicon die and internal circuitry become visible for inspection under specialized equipment like electron microscopes. NOW YOU KNOW!
