Baffling

Short answer: Baffle blocks are concrete blocks set in spillways, canals, chutes and stilling basins to break up fast flows. They create turbulence that dissipates the water's energy and slows it, reducing erosion and damage downstream.

Their size and spacing are designed for the expected flow. The footage shows water churning over rows of baffle blocks.

Video transcript: Baffling: Rows of Concrete Blocks Slow Water Rushing Down a Spillway

Baffle blocks are structures placed in waterways to dissipate the energy of flowing water and reduce erosion and damage downstream. Typically located in areas like spillways, canals, or flood channels, these blocks [...] disrupt the flow velocity water by creating turbulence, which slows the water's speed. Made from durable materials such as concrete, baffle blocks [...] strategically arranged to evenly distribute [...] dissipation. NOW YOU KNOW!
