Cloud River

Short answer: Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow corridors of concentrated water vapor in the lower atmosphere that carry moisture thousands of kilometers from the tropics toward higher latitudes.

A strong one can move more water than the largest rivers on Earth, and when it meets mountains or cooler air the vapor condenses into heavy rain or snow. The footage, credited to daniel_asam, shows clouds flowing over a ridge.

Video transcript: Cloud River: Some Rivers Flow Through the Sky

Did you know, high altitude atmospheric rivers, or cloud rivers, are long, narrow bands of concentrated moisture that flow through the sky, typically at altitudes of several kilometers. These airborne rivers can carry more water vapor than the Amazon River holds in liquid form, transporting it thousands of kilometers from tropical oceans toward higher latitudes. When they encounter mountain ranges or cooler air masses, the moisture condenses, producing intense rainfall or snow. NOW YOU KNOW!
