Dune Surfing

Short answer: The Reel's 80 km/h is not an everyday figure. Guinness lists 82 km/h, set in 1999, as the men's sandboard record and 71.94 km/h as the women's, so 80 km/h is within a whisker of the fastest anyone has been timed on a board.

That board record has stood for 27 years, while the sand-skiing record jumped from 92 km/h to 121 km/h in September 2025 and to 127 km/h in October 2026; Wikipedia still gives the old 92.12 km/h mark. Friction still bites at those speeds, since Guinness says the base of Mahé Freydier's ski melted during his record run. The sport's other limit is logistics: Wikipedia says there is only one sand lift in the world.

Did you know, sandboarding is essentially snowboarding on sand dunes, but the different surface creates some unusual challenges. Instead of snow, riders descend slopes made of loose sand, sometimes reaching speeds of 80 kilometers per hour on steep, carefully maintained dunes. Specialized boards typically have hard, smooth bases coated with wax to reduce friction, because sand creates much more resistance than snow. NOW YOU KNOW!

File Synthesis

A Frenchman flying down a Peruvian dune at 121 km/h on skis felt the base of one ski melt away beneath him.

  1. Exhibit A

    Doctor Dune

Modern sandboarding is largely credited to Lon Beale, known as 'Doctor Dune', who started riding in California's Mojave Desert in 1972.

  2. Exhibit B

    No Easy Lift

Building a mechanised lift on a dune is very difficult, so riders usually climb back up or take a dune buggy or ATV to the top.

  3. Exhibit C

    The One Sand Lift

Monte Kaolino in Hirschau, Germany, hosted the Sandboarding World Championships until 2007 and has what Wikipedia calls the only sand lift in the world.

  4. Exhibit D

    Men's Record

Guinness lists Erik Johnson's 82 km/h (51 mph), set at the Sand Master Jam at Dumont Dunes, California, on April 12, 1999, as the men's sandboard record.

  5. Exhibit E

    Women's Record

Nancy Sutton's 71.94 km/h (44.7 mph) at Sand Mountain, Nevada, on September 19, 1998, is the Guinness women's sandboard record.

  6. Exhibit F

    Skis Melt Too

Mahé Freydier's 121 km/h sand-skiing run in Peru on September 25, 2025, burned a hole in his skis, and Guinness now lists 127 km/h from October 16, 2026.
