Fireflies
Short answer: Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are beetles that produce light in their abdomens. The light comes from a reaction in which the enzyme luciferase acts on a compound called luciferin.
Fireflies mainly use their flashes to attract mates, and different species have distinct flash patterns.

Video transcript: Fireflies: A Firefly's Light Comes From Luciferin and the Enzyme Luciferase
Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are perhaps the most well known bioluminescent insects. Did you know? The light they emit is a result of a chemical reaction in their abdomens that involves a light producing pigment called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase. This is actually really cool because fireflies use their bioluminescence primarily for communication, signaling to potential mates with distinct flash patterns. The enchanting glow of fireflies on a summer evening is a remarkable example of nature's light show. NOW YOU KNOW!
