Mount Kailash
Short answer: Mount Kailash is a 6,638 m (21,778 ft) peak in the Gangdise (Kailash) Range of the Transhimalaya, in Ngari Prefecture in western Tibet, China. It is sacred in four religions.
Hindus regard it as the home of Shiva. Buddhist texts describe it as the mythological Mount Meru. According to Jain scriptures, Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara, attained liberation there. It is also sacred in Bon, Tibet's pre-Buddhist tradition. There is no recorded ascent. The Chinese government prohibits climbing it because of its religious significance. A Spanish expedition was refused permission in 2001, and the mountaineer Reinhold Messner turned down an offer from the Chinese government in the mid-1980s. Instead, pilgrims walk a circuit (kora or parikrama) around the mountain, about 52–53 km long and with its highest point at the Drölma pass, about 5,650 m. Hindus and Buddhists walk it clockwise and Bon followers counterclockwise. Sources disagree about Jains: Wikipedia says they walk clockwise, while Britannica says they go counterclockwise. The sources of four rivers lie nearby: the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Ghaghara (Karnali). Britannica notes that pilgrimage access reopened in 1981, that Indian pilgrimages paused for about five years from 2020 and that they resumed in June 2025. The footage shows aerial views of the snow-capped peak.
