Old-Timey Laundry

Short answer: Before electric washers spread in the 20th century, many households used hand-cranked or lever-operated machines with wooden tubs and internal paddles or dollies that agitated clothes. They still took real effort but were easier than scrubbing on a washboard.

Electric washing machines appeared in the early 1900s. The footage shows an antique wooden washer being cranked.
