Rabies Crazies

Short answer: Rabies is a viral infection usually spread by bites or scratches from infected animals. The virus travels along peripheral nerves to the brain, where it causes encephalitis.

Animals may show furious rabies, with aggression, drooling and lack of fear, or paralytic rabies, with weakness and paralysis. Once symptoms appear it is nearly always fatal, though vaccination soon after exposure prevents it. The footage shows animals with behavior changes.

Video transcript: Rabies Crazies: Rabies Travels Along Nerves From a Bite to the Brain

Did you know, rabies affects animals by attacking their central nervous system, leading to severe neurological symptoms and ultimately death. After a bite or scratch from an infected animal, the rabies virus travels through the peripheral nerves to the brain. Once in the brain, it multiplies rapidly, causing inflammation or encephalitis that leads to dramatic behavioral and physical changes. Affected animals often exhibit one of two forms, furious rabies, marked by aggression, excessive drooling and fearlessness, or paralytic rabies, characterized by weakness, disorientation, and paralysis.
