Rotor Hydraulics

Short answer: Helicopter flight controls change the pitch of main and tail rotor blades to manage lift, pitch, roll and yaw.

In most larger helicopters, hydraulic actuators using pressurized fluid assist the pilot in moving the swashplate and linkages, which would otherwise be too hard to move under aerodynamic loads. The footage, credited to eurekahnb, shows a rotor head's linkages moving.

Video transcript: Rotor Hydraulics: Hydraulics Help Helicopter Pilots Move Rotor Controls Against Huge Forces

Did you know? Helicopter rotor hydraulics play a critical role in controlling the main and tail rotor blades, allowing the pilot to manage lift, pitch, yaw, and roll with precision. The system uses pressurized hydraulic fluid to assist in moving heavy mechanical components that would be too difficult to operate manually, especially under aerodynamic loads. NOW YOU KNOW!
