Sharpening Your Mind

Short answer: Before sharpeners, pencils were whittled with knives. The French mathematician Bernard Lassimone patented a pencil sharpener in 1828, and many hand-operated designs followed in the 19th century.

Rotary sharpeners use gear-driven helical cutters that turn around the pencil, giving a long, even point. The footage shows an old mechanical sharpener being restored and tested.

Did you know? Mechanical pencil sharpeners have evolved notably over time. Initially, these were simple hand-operated devices made from metal, where users manually twisted the pencil to sharpen it against a blade. The earliest designs, patented in the 19th century, featured a basic mechanism with a fixed blade and a cylindrical barrel to hold the pencil. In the 20th century, sharpeners improved with more refined mechanisms, including adjustable blades and various ergonomic designs. Innovations such as rotary sharpeners introduced a gear-driven system, allowing for more sharpening. Today's manual sharpeners often incorporate advanced materials and precision engineering for enhanced durability and performance. NOW YOU KNOW!
