Shifty Periphery

Short answer: Peripheral vision is especially good at detecting motion. The outer retina has a higher share of rod cells, which are very sensitive to light changes and movement, while the central fovea is packed with cones for detail and color.

Motion in the wide visual field helps the brain detect movement, keep balance and judge speed, the Reel says. The footage, credited to howeverythingworks, shows a motion illusion.

Video transcript: Shifty Periphery: You Often Notice Movement Out of the Corner of Your Eye First

Did you know, objects in the periphery of vision play a crucial role in motion perception, helping the brain detect movement, maintain balance, and gauge speed? The peripheral retina is more sensitive to motion than the central retina, as it contains a higher concentration of rod cells, which excel at detecting changes in light and movement. This sensitivity allows the brain to process motion more effectively in the wider visual field, even when not directly focused on an object. NOW YOU KNOW!
