Shine Sublime

Short answer: A shoe shine follows a few basic steps: clean the leather, condition and color it, then build and buff a protective layer. Shoe creams are softer and richer in oils and pigment, so they nourish and recolor.

Wax polishes leave a harder layer that gives shine and some water resistance. A 'mirror' or 'spit' shine comes from many thin coats of wax buffed with a little water. Modern tinned polish owes much to Kiwi. William Ramsay and Hamilton McKellar launched it in Melbourne in 1906, and its 1908 Dark Tan polish was marketed for restoring color and preserving leather. Through the 20th century, shining shoes was also a street trade, from bootblacks to the shoe-shine stands still found in stations and airports.

DID YOU KNOW? Shoe shining is the process of cleaning, polishing, and protecting footwear to maintain its appearance and extend its lifespan. The process typically begins with brushing or wiping away dirt and dust, followed by applying a polish or cream that nourishes the leather and restores color. The write-up

Cream for color, wax for shine. Kiwi polish launched in Melbourne in 1906.

  1. Exhibit A

    Clean first

Dirt and old polish are brushed or wiped off so new product can reach the leather.

  2. Exhibit B

    Cream vs wax

Creams carry more oils and pigment, so they condition and recolor. Wax polishes, typically blends of waxes, solvent and dye, leave a harder layer for shine and some water resistance. Many shiners use both, cream first.

  3. Exhibit C

    The mirror shine

A high 'spit shine' is built from many thin coats of wax, each buffed with a cloth and a drop of water, mostly on the toe and heel, where the leather flexes least.

  4. Exhibit D

    Kiwi, 1906

Scottish-born William Ramsay and Hamilton McKellar launched Kiwi polish in Melbourne in 1906, naming it after the national bird of New Zealand, the homeland of Ramsay's wife. Its 1908 Dark Tan was sold as restoring color and preserving leather.

  5. Exhibit E

    A trade and a culture

Kiwi's 1914 'Shine Sir' advertisement shows hotel boot boys polishing guests' shoes. Shoe-shining remained a street and station trade through the 20th century.
