Spinning a Yarn

Short answer: Textiles are made from natural fibers such as cotton, wool and silk, or synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon. Fibers are cleaned and combed, then spun, which twists them into yarn.

Yarn is woven on looms, knitted, or the fibers are bonded into nonwovens to make fabric. The fabric is then dyed or printed and finished. Polyester is now the most produced fiber worldwide. The footage shows spinning, weaving and dyeing in textile mills, with the presenter.

Video transcript: Spinning a Yarn: Every Fabric Starts as Fibers Twisted Into Yarn

Textiles are a fundamental part of our everyday lives, from the clothes we wear to the materials used in our homes and businesses. The production of textiles begins with a selection of raw materials, which can include natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk, or synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. These fibers are then spun into yarn, which is then woven, knitted, or otherwise processed into fabric. The fabric is dyed or printed with patterns and designs, before being finished and prepared for use. Textile production is a highly complex and labor-intensive process that requires precision and attention to detail. With the rise of sustainable and eco-friendly practices, the textile industry is evolving to meet the demands of a more conscious consumer base, driving innovation and creativity in the process.
