The Last Czar

Short answer: Nicholas II was the last Emperor of Russia, reigning from November 1894 until his abdication in March 1917. His reign included rapid industrial growth, defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 to 1905, the 1905 Revolution and Russia's entry into the First World War.

Wartime losses and shortages fed the February Revolution of 1917, and he abdicated. In July 1918, Bolshevik forces shot Nicholas, his wife Alexandra, their five children and four attendants in Yekaterinburg. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized the family in 2000. The footage shows illustrations of Nicholas II, his family and Russia, with the presenter.
