Urban Flood Control

Short answer: Urban flooding happens when heavy rain overwhelms a city's drainage. Impermeable surfaces such as concrete, asphalt and rooftops keep water from soaking into the soil, so runoff rushes into storm drains faster than they can carry it.

Cities respond with larger drains, retention basins, permeable pavement and green spaces. The footage shows floodwater surging through city streets.

Video transcript: Urban Flood Control: Concrete and Asphalt Stop Rain From Soaking Into the Ground

Urban flooding occurs when heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems in cities, causing water to accumulate on streets, sidewalks, and properties. This flooding [...] exacerbated by [...] proportion of impermeable surfaces in urban areas, such as concrete, asphalt, and rooftops which prevent water from naturally seeping into the ground. As a result, water flows rapidly into storm drains which may [...] the capacity to handle such large volumes, leading to overflow. NOW YOU KNOW!
