Varnish Vanishing
Short answer: Varnish protects paintings and saturates their colors, but natural resin varnishes yellow and darken with age. Conservators test solvents on small, hidden areas, then roll swabs to dissolve and lift the old varnish in small sections without disturbing the paint, often revealing much brighter colors.
A new, stable varnish may be applied afterward. The footage shows a conservator swabbing varnish off a painting.

Video transcript: Varnish Vanishing: Old Varnish Yellows and Hides a Painting's True Colors
Did you know? Removing varnish from old paintings is a delicate process that requires expertise and precision to avoid damaging the underlying artwork. Varnish, applied to protect and enhance the painting, can yellow and obscure details over time. Conservators use specialized solvents tailored to the specific type of varnish and painting medium. The process begins with careful testing on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure the solvent removes the varnish without affecting the paint layers. Using cotton swabs or soft brushes, conservators gently dissolve and lift the varnish layer in small sections, revealing the original colors and details beneath. NOW YOU KNOW!
