Wakey Wakey

Short answer: A dormant volcano has not erupted in a long time but could again. It can reawaken when new magma rises into its plumbing, when gases build pressure in the chamber, or when tectonic movement opens fractures.

Scientists watch for earthquakes, ground swelling and gas changes. Mount Pinatubo, quiet for about 500 years, erupted in 1991. The footage shows an erupting volcano.

Video transcript: Wakey Wakey: A Volcano Quiet for Centuries Can Still Erupt

Did you know, dormant volcanoes, though seemingly inactive, can be reawakened by changes deep in the Earth's crust. When tectonic plates shift, it can create fractures or increase magma pressure beneath the surface, which could trigger volcanic activity. In some cases, new magma can rise through the existing volcanic pathways, renewing heat and pressure in previously dormant chambers. The buildup of gases within the magma is another critical factor. If pressure becomes too great, it can eventually force an eruption. Dormant volcanoes are closely monitored, as reactive complex and can occur with little depending on geological shifts and movements. NOW YOU KNOW!
