Water in the Desert
Short answer: Desert sand is loose and porous, with large gaps between grains, so water infiltrates quickly. It sinks until it reaches less permeable layers such as clay or bedrock; some can recharge aquifers, though much evaporates in desert heat.
The footage shows water rushing across sand and soaking in at the front.

Video transcript: Water in the Desert: Water Poured on Desert Sand Can Vanish Almost Instantly
Did you know, when water moves quickly through desert sand, it typically infiltrates quickly. Due to the loose, porous structure of the sand, desert sand grains are often dry and widely spaced, allowing water to seep down rapidly until it reaches compacted layers or bedrock that block further penetration. In some cases, this water collects in underground reservoirs, known as aquifers, where it can stay for long periods, slowly replenishing groundwater. NOW YOU KNOW!
