Whale Milk
Short answer: Baleen whale milk at mid-lactation is about 30-50% fat, 9-15% protein and only 40-53% water. Toothed whales and dolphins produce thinner milk, about 10-30% fat.
Whales have no external nipples; their teats sit inside mammary slits, and the mother squirts milk into the calf's mouth. Its thickness keeps it from dispersing in seawater, and a blue whale calf can gain over 100 kg a day. The richest-milk record, though, belongs to seals such as the hooded seal, not whales.

Video transcript: Whale Milk: Why Whale Milk Doesn't Dissolve in the Sea
DID YOU KNOW? Whales produce some of the richest milk in the animal kingdom to support the extraordinary growth rates of their calves in the open ocean. Because milk would quickly disperse in seawater, whale milk has a thick, toothpaste-like consistency, with fat contents often ranging from 30% to 50%, allowing it to stay cohesive as the calf feeds underwater. A mother whale ejects the milk directly into her calf's mouth using muscular contractions around the mammary glands. NOW YOU KNOW!

The write-up
Why whale milk doesn't dissolve in the sea. Baleen whale milk can be 30-50% fat and as thick as toothpaste.
- Exhibit A
How rich
At mid-lactation, baleen whale milk is about 30-50% fat, 9-15% protein and only 40-53% water. Toothed whales and dolphins make thinner milk, about 10-30% fat, and nurse for 1-3 years instead of 5-7 months.
- Exhibit B
Why it's thick
The high fat content makes the milk about as thick as toothpaste, so it holds together in seawater instead of dispersing.
- Exhibit C
No nipples outside
Whales' teats are tucked inside mammary slits. The mother squirts milk into the calf's mouth, and calves can curl their tongues to channel it.
- Exhibit D
Watching it happen
Tags with cameras on humpback mothers and calves recorded nursing bouts averaging about 23 seconds, at depths from about 12 to 200 feet.
- Exhibit E
Fast growth
A nursing blue whale produces more than 50 gallons of milk a day, and its calf can gain up to about 250 pounds (over 100 kg) a day.
